Highlights of Dr. Sugarbaker & Dr. Gonzalez’s Historical Visit to China

Dr. Paul H Sugarbaker, the founder of Peritoneal Surface Oncology Group International (PSOGI), and Dr. Santiago Gonzalez-Moreno, the president of European Society of Surgical Oncology, visited Beijing Shijitan Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China,  from April 21 to 23.



As the Department of Peritoneal Cancer Surgery led by Dr. Yan Li has focused on Peritoneal Carcinomatosis for over 15 years, with outstanding clinical benefits and prestigious academic reputations both home and abroad, Beijing ShijitanHospital has been recognized as the China Center of PSOGI and China Center of European School of Peritoneal Surface Oncology. Dr. Sugarbaker confers the bronze plaque to Dr. Jian-Li Xu (right), president of Beijing ShijitianHospital. Dr. Gonzalez presents the plaque to Dr. Yan Li (left).

Dr. Sugarbaker and Dr. Gonzalez have been invited as the Guest Professors of the School of Oncology, Beijing ShijitanHospital of Capital Medical University. Dr. Jian-Li Xu (left) confers the Guest Professor Certificates to Dr. Sugarbaker and Dr. Gonzalez.


At the annual meeting of School of Oncology of Capital Medical University, Dr. Sugarbaker presented a keynote speech on cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermicintraperitoneal chemotherapy to treat peritoneal carcinomatosis, focusing on technical particularities.


Dr. Sugarbaker and Dr. Gonzalez also have a grand ward rounding of the Department of Peritoneal Cancer Surgery. They are talking with Dr. Yan Li about the postoperative management of a patient.

Both professors have a high appraisal on the professionalism and dedications of the nurses, saying the nurses have contributed a major part to the patients’ well-being and recovery. Dr. Sugarbaker also attends Dr. Yan Li’s outpatient clinic. After examining a patient with ascites sand abdominal mass, Dr. Sugarbaker gives his detailed analysis of the MRI features.

Dr. Sugarbaker also visits the PMP department of Aerospace Central Hospital. Dr. Hong-Bin Xu, the head of the PMP department, introduces his department to Dr. Sugarbaker.


Dr. Sugarbaker also delivers a keynote speech at the 12th International Gastric Cancer Congress (IGCC), with the title: CRS+HIPEC as A Novel Treatment of Gastric Cancer with Peritoneal Metastasis. The talk is spectacular and the lecture hall is overcrowded with the audience standing at every corner of the hall.

Dr. Sugarbaker, Dr. Gonzalez and Dr. Li are invited as guests of honor by Medical Video, the largest and most influential  professional medical video education website supported by Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. They have a panel discussion on peritoneal carcinomatosis, the history, the current status, education and training, and CRS+HIPEC programs in China.


Dr. Sugarbaker and Dr. Gonzalez are accompanied by Dr. Li to visit the Summer Palace, the most famous Royal Garden in China. Both professors are thrilled by the breath-taking beauty and the rich cultural heritage of the park.

Touring the Great Wall of China is surely the most exciting climax of Dr. Sugarbaker’shistorical visit to China. The most amazing thing to the young guys is Dr. Sugarbaker walks all his way through the open section to the top point of the Great Wall, and walks all the way back to the mountain foot. Dr. Sugarbaker is not only a brave conqueror of peritoneal cancer, but also an awesome conqueror of the Great Wall!  Congratulations!
